Over the years, Bridging Gaps has empowered 250+ entrepreneurs across three countries, fostering 86 thriving social businesses. And many of you have asked about our selection criteria. So, let's dive in: How do we select entrepreneurs while ensuring inclusiveness?
Insights from Bidibidi:
Number one - we remain flexible and keep on strenghtening our knowledge. Last week, for example, our co-founder Malish participated in a critical training session by UNHCR on assessing Persons with Specific Needs (PSNs). This training provided valuable insights that will further refine our selection criteria and strengthen the inclusiveness of our programs.
Our guiding framework for inclusion
At Bridging Gaps, our selection process is built on six core principles that reflect our mission and values:
Youth focus: When working with refugees, we prioritize empowering young entrepreneurs aged 18 to 35, fostering innovation and energy in our programs. This focus ensures that the next generation of changemakers has the support they need to succeed.
Women empowerment: At least 50% of our participants are women, ensuring gender equity and amplifying the voices of women as leaders and changemakers in their communities.
Vulnerability inclusion: Using tools like the UN vulnerability scale, we prioritize people with disabilities, larger families, and those facing economic hardships, ensuring our programs reach those who need them most.
Commitment to growth: We seek individuals eager to learn, grow, and engage in mentorship and training. These entrepreneurs are committed to acquiring the skills they need to succeed.
Community contribution: Applicants who are ready to “pay it forward” and empower others are essential to our mission. This principle reinforces the ripple effect of empowerment and ensures the benefits of our programs extend far beyond the individual participants.
Additional selection factors: We also consider factors like prior entrepreneurial experience, credit history (which, in practice and depending on the context, is often not available), leadership skills, and the ability to mentor others. These qualities indicate an applicant's potential for success and their capacity to uplift others.
Building brighter futures, one entrepreneur at a time!
Our selection process is more than just choosing participants; it’s about creating opportunities for sustainable growth and community empowerment. This training in Bidibidi serves as a reminder that our work is ever-evolving, and we remain committed to learning and adapting to meet the needs of those we serve. One entrepreneur at a time!
